THE LAGOS DREAM - my version (City of the Hustlers)

THE LAGOS DREAM - my version (City of the Hustlers)

My article on the experience of an average Lagos citizen with a hustling spirit.

"The future belongs to those who believe in d beauty of their dream"- according to Eleanor Roosevelt. This quote can be related 2 a typical Lagos citizen (hustler) who strives daily and diligently pursue his visualized aspirations to make sure he meets them. In addition, the American businessman Harvey Mackay stated thus "when you have a dream that you can't let go, trust your instincts and pursue it, but remember real dreams take hardwork, they take patience and sometimes they require you to dig down very deep. Be sure you're willing to do that. This quote also can be related to that same typical Lagos citizen.

Hustle is a foul word(slang) used to denote someone who strives, works hard and pursue his target using every means and going to any length to achieve it. The hustlers see opportunities where others doesn't, they study their environment and find means to make a source of livelihood through it's utilization. Shifting emphasis towards environment, Lagos state also known as "Oko" (farmland in Yoruba) but corrupted or changed to the very popular "Eko" has been Nigeria's premier city since at least 1861, also the formal capital city of the country. Lagos means Lakes in Portuguese, the language of the first European settlers known to have visited the settlement in 1472 from then inhabitants "Awori's". Fast forward to a modern-day Lagos, a city known for its dense population, busy streets and massive traffic gridlock in Nigeria, Lagos is also a world class destination, Nigeria's most amazing city that has wonderful beaches, skyscrapers, amazing parks, best entertainment options, most job opportunities and so much more.

The state is divided into two regions; the mainland area and the Island. Those who live on the island are considered the high class citizens according to their social status, while those who reside on the mainland are both middle class/lower class. Hustling in Eko city is never easy though it takes both courage and tenacity to edge close to actualizing your dreams, but trust me when it comes off, it is worth the effort. In my last two articles I talked about the life of a Lagos worker and the struggles faced by the unemployed youth in this state. These two scenarios are interrelated and it indicates that even after securing a job the hustle continues. In Lagos state every facet of life is hustle; leaving your home early in the morning (workers) to beat traffic is hustle, boarding a bus to your place of work/destination is hustle, especially when you have to rush and struggle to catch a seat, coming back home after work hours is still hustle, going to the market is hustle, looking for what to buy is hustle(laughs), Trading (commerce) is even the main hustle, in short every activity in Lagos is hustling. Looking at this critically one has to sharpen up if u are the timid type before, or else you will be eaten up.

There is no doubt that development in Lagos state has been so massive, it has been going at a fast rate which is good and indicates the brilliant work of the Governor, his Excellency Akinwunmi Ambode who is not contented with a shadowy figure and an underdog status, Two years after taking over the oath of office, he seem to have stepped up with the recent mega project that would definitely etch his name among the greats that have ruled this state. One notable potential landmark is the 70 million dollars regeneration project for the notorious Oshodi bus Terminal , the project intended to transform  Oshodi into a world class transport interchange hub thereby creating employment. The hustlers will definitely be smiling at their bank, with the pace at which the state is developing economically. For a state renowned as the city of the hustlers is now a niche for adventurers.
The Lagos dream surely will end in praise.
